NYC Aging Fitness Day will bring music, movement and community spirit to Foley Square on Wednesday, May 27, as more than 1,000 older New Yorkers gather for a morning dedicated to dance, fitness and wellness.
The NYC Department for the Aging, known as NYC Aging, will host its third annual celebration of National Older Adult Health and Fitness Day from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Foley Square Park, between Lafayette and Worth Streets in Manhattan. This year’s theme is “Move a Little… Live a Lot! Dance Through the Decades.”
The event is expected to turn Foley Square into a large outdoor dance floor. Older adults from across the five boroughs will take part in fitness activities, line dancing and wellness programming. The celebration will also feature fitness experts, community organizations and older adult performers.
NYC Aging Fitness Day aims to highlight the importance of staying active later in life. It also shines a light on social connection, which is a major part of healthy aging. For many older New Yorkers, events like this are not only about exercise. They are also about joy, visibility and community.
Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Dr. Helen Arteaga and NYC Aging Commissioner Dr. Lisa Scott-McKenzie are expected to attend. Local, state and federal elected officials are also scheduled to join, along with community stakeholders from across New York City.
National Older Adult Health and Fitness Day is recognized across the country each year. The observance promotes physical activity, healthy habits and stronger social connections among older adults.
The visuals at Foley Square are expected to be lively. Organizers anticipate crowd shots, energetic group fitness moments and older adults dancing through different eras of music. The celebration is designed to show that movement can be fun, accessible and meaningful at any age.
NYC Aging Fitness Day also sends a broader message about older New Yorkers. They are not sitting on the sidelines. They are leading, participating, dancing and proving that wellness can look a lot like celebration.
